This research project aims to contribute to the understanding the conception process of prototyping a virtual environment to support learning for cultural institutions, based on the four Pillars of Education and models for collaborative learning, applied to distance education.

The work is divided into three distinct moments. It starts by referring changes are taking place in the emerging knowledge society, potentiated by the Information and Communication Technologies, and the importance of the pillars of knowledge for Education in the XXI Century. The second moment presents the learning theories and instructional design for a collaborative virtual learning environment. The third moment describes the conception and the development process of the prototype.
